ImagineIT Dilemmas
Teaching in Urban Settings:
My ImagineIt focuses on introducing female students at my school to careers in STEM education and participating in more STEM related activities. Many of my students are the first in their families to go to college and therefore have never been introduced to some of the STEM related jobs and majors they could pursue in college. One of the dilemmas I’m facing is what exactly do I introduce them to when it comes to choosing a STEM related career? I’m going to start by polling the students in my group to see what careers they are already interested in and then hope to research a Women in STEM job fair that I might be able to advertise to them or hopefully even attend with them.
Students (Caring for Other People’s Children)
Another dilemma that I am having is working with students that may have an interest in STEM but their families do not want them to pursue this as a career. Some different reasons may be they are an undocumented citizen, they have responsibilities already at home and cannot go to school or their parents have never heard of this career and may not want their child exploring something that is so unfamiliar to them. One way that I am hoping to avoid these dilemmas is by hosting a family night where presenters with different STEM careers can come present to not only the students that are currently in the group but also their family members. I am also going to try and make sure that if I do have presenters they have a similar background story that that of my students.
